I know at least Dolby's patents expired at some point in the last couple of years, but that doesn't mean they have to make their own implementation free, either, and since most people are using HDMI these days instead of optical, there's still not much in the way of an alternative. You need to be able to re-encode the sound in real time for that to work, and Dolby and DTS both want money for the encoder. What type of media are you trying to play? If it's a video game it flat out won't work without shelling out for a Dolby Digital Live/DTS Connect license, and that's if the hardware even supports it. Has anyone found a working driver for this? Or perhaps some kind of work around? I'm open to suggestions even if that suggestion is that this will never work and I should just purchase a sound card.ītw ARC is not an option here as my video ends up going to a projector that does not support ARC. I'd prefer to not purchase a sound card, especially when I can clearly have it work, the drivers just wont let me set that as the default output.

However I'm unable to set the default format to Dolby Digital with the standard drivers. Testing Dolby Digital in the Supported Formats tab results in actual 5.1 surround, with both my rear channels working as expected. I attempted one which did add said option to my dropdown list in Default Format but I was unable to get any audio to play out of the rear channels.
